Alberta iela 8
One facade in the street that Riga built to show the world what Art Nouveau could be.
At a glance
Alberta iela 8 is an Art Nouveau apartment building of 1903 on Albert Street, the most celebrated Art Nouveau street in Riga. It is one of the richly decorated apartment facades of the street, generally attributed to Mikhail Eisenstein — a civil engineer and architect who, in the years 1901–1906, gave Riga some of its best-known buildings. Every house on Albert Street is a protected architectural monument, and this one carries the flamboyant, ornament-laden manner that made Eisenstein’s name.

History
Albert Street was laid out in 1901 and named, for the 700th anniversary of the city, after Bishop Albert, who founded Riga in 1201. It was built up in the following years as the city boomed, and quickly became a showcase of the new architecture.
Mikhail Eisenstein designed several of the street’s apartment houses; number 8, dated 1903, is generally counted among them. A civil engineer by training, he was active in Riga at the height of its Art Nouveau, and his decorative facades along Albert Street are among the most photographed in northern Europe. He was the father of the Soviet film director Sergei Eisenstein.
Every building on the street is today an architectural monument, and the area forms part of Riga’s historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
What you see
The facade is an exercise in pure display: a tall apartment front loaded with Art Nouveau ornament, where the structural wall almost disappears behind decorative relief, mouldings and rhythmic detail. This is the “eclectic”, ornament-first stage of Riga Art Nouveau, and Eisenstein was its showman.
Seen with its neighbours, the building reads as one panel in a continuous decorated streetscape. The point of Albert Street is the cumulative effect, facade answering facade down the whole length of the road.
