Akureyrarkirkja
A striking modernist Lutheran church in northern Iceland, Akureyrarkirkja dominates Akureyri’s city centre with its distinctive architecture and internationally sourced decorative arts.

History
Architect Guðjón Samúelsson (1887–1950) designed Akureyrarkirkja during the interwar period, and the church was completed in 1940. In 2017, vandalism caused approximately 20 million ISK in damage to the building.
What you see
The church’s interior displays remarkable craftsmanship across multiple elements. Icelandic sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson (1893–1982) created the bas-reliefs adorning the nave balcony. The altarpiece, dated 1863, was designed by Danish artist Edvard Lehmann (1815–1892). Windows were designed and made by the English firm J. Wippel & Co. of Exeter, Devon. The Italian white marble baptismal font was created by Florentine sculptor Corrado Vigni (1888–1956). An angel baptismal font serves as a replica of a work by renowned Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), whose original is housed at Copenhagen Cathedral.
Cultural significance
Akureyrarkirkja represents the cosmopolitan ambitions of early twentieth-century Iceland, drawing on artistic expertise from Denmark, Italy, and England. The church reflects both Nordic Lutheran traditions and the international design movements of its era.
