Aivazovsky National Art Gallery
One of Russia’s earliest art museums, founded by the renowned marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky in his own house, now holds the world’s largest collection of his works alongside 12,000 paintings exploring nautical and coastal themes.

History
Ivan Aivazovsky opened the first exhibition in his Feodosia house in 1845, displaying 49 of his own paintings. By 1880, an additional exhibition hall was built adjacent to the residence, establishing the gallery as the third museum in the Russian Empire—surpassed only by the Hermitage and the Tretyakov Gallery.
Following Aivazovsky’s death in 1900, his testament transferred ownership to the city of Feodosia. In late 1920, the Cheka occupied the building and damaged several works. The gallery was formally designated a state museum of the Soviet Union in 1922, a status it has maintained. A monument by sculptor Ilya Ginzburg, inscribed “Feodosia to Aivazovsky,” was erected before the main building in 1930.
What you see
The museum comprises the original 19th-century house and subsequent additions. The main building displays Aivazovsky’s biography and artistic evolution alongside gallery history. A separate structure—the artist’s sister’s house—presents mythological and biblical paintings, 18th and 19th-century European marine works, and paintings by the Cimmerian school including Isaac Levitan, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Maximilian Voloshin, and Konstantin Bogaevsky.

The gallery preserves the world’s largest collection of Aivazovsky’s paintings: 417 works documenting his mastery of seascapes and maritime subjects. The holdings represent a comprehensive survey of Russian and European marine painting traditions. The institution stands as a monument to 19th-century artistic patronage and cultural preservation during revolutionary upheaval.
