Air and Space Museum

An aeronautical museum housed in Villa Zaborra Castello di San Pelagio, preserving aircraft, flight memorabilia, and the historical spaces connected to a celebrated World War I aviation mission.

At a glance

The Air and Space Museum occupies Villa Zaborra Castello di San Pelagio, a historic property in Due Carrare near Padua. The collection spans aircraft and scale models, alongside carefully reconstructed interiors tied to Italian aviation history. The museum opened on 20 September 1980.

History

The villa gained prominence in 1918 as the launching point for a significant military operation. On 9 August of that year, the 87th Airplane Squadron, commanded by Major Gabriele D’Annunzio, departed from an airfield south of Villa Zaborra to undertake the Flight to Vienna. This daring raid became one of the most celebrated episodes of Italian aviation during the First World War. The museum’s establishment in 1980 transformed the property into a repository for this heritage.

What you see

Visitors encounter both aircraft and detailed scale models throughout the museum. Two rooms receive particular attention: scenic reconstructions of the kitchen and hall where the Vienna flight was planned in August 1918. These spaces evoke the atmosphere and preparations of that historic moment, bridging the gap between the villa’s domestic past and its role in aviation history.

Cultural significance

The museum documents a pivotal chapter in early Italian military aviation. The Vienna flight remains an iconic venture in World War I history, and its connection to Villa Zaborra elevates the site beyond a simple building—it becomes a monument to technological ambition and wartime boldness. The preservation of the planning rooms anchors abstract historical narrative to tangible, lived space.
