An AGIP service station with offices above, built by Mario Bacciocchi at Piazzale Accursio: rounded, cantilevered, and restored in 2017.

Between 1951 and 1953 Mario Bacciocchi, the architect of many AGIP buildings, designed a service station with offices and a manager’s flat above it on the V-shaped plot where Viale Certosa meets Via Espinasse, at Piazzale Accursio. The Lombardy heritage catalogue describes it as a building that looks like the deck of a ship with the wings of a jet. It sold fuel until the mid-1980s. In 2017 Michele De Lucchi restored it for Garage Italia.

History
The city first rejected the project, objecting to how far the canopy projected and to the blank walls towards the neighbouring buildings, and approved it after a revision. Besides the pumps, the station had a car wash, a waiting room with a bar and an electrical workshop. After it closed it housed a tyre workshop. De Lucchi’s restoration re-clad the facades in glazed stoneware like the originals and put the neon back under the two canopies, as in the 1950s.
What you see
A rounded head on the corner of the two roads, two floors high, with long canopies cantilevered on either side. Corners, cornices and brackets are all rounded.
