1. The Foundation (1923)
In 1923, visionary entrepreneur Shinjiro Torii founded the Yamazaki Distillery in the Vale of Yamazaki, near Osaka. As Japan’s first commercial malt whisky distillery, it marked the birth of an industry that would eventually rival the historic producers of Scotland.
2. Development and Industrial Impact
Inspired by traditional Scottish methods, Torii hired Masataka Taketsuru, who had studied distillation in Scotland. However, Torii insisted on adapting the craft to the Japanese palate and climate. He chose the Yamazaki region for its exceptionally pure water—revered since the days of Sen no Rikyū, the legendary tea master—and its unique, humid climate, which is ideal for cask maturation. The distillery introduced its first whisky, Suntory Shirofuda (White Label), in 1929. Though initially met with mixed reactions, it laid the unshakeable foundation for what would become the Suntory beverage empire.
