Incorporated in Milan in 1915, the Compagnia Anonima Macchine Finanziaria (Camfin) was formed to manage strategic capital participations, urban utility equipment, and industrial infrastructure concessions across northern Italy.

Gas Concessions and the Camuzzi Syndicate

During the First World War and subsequent interwar consolidation, municipal governments required specialized private capital to maintain gas production facilities, coal gasification plants, and regional pipeline distribution networks. Camfin established close structural synergies with the Camuzzi Gazometri group, acquiring municipal concessions to supply lighting gas and heating utilities across Lombardy and neighboring regions. Operating from headquarters situated within Milan’s central business core, the enterprise demonstrated the growing sophistication of Italian corporate holdings orchestrating public utility infrastructure.

Corporate Evolution and the Pirelli Partnership

In the late twentieth century, under the leadership of the Tronchetti Provera family, Camfin restructured its operations, focusing on strategic industrial finance and international manufacturing holdings. The firm became the core financial vehicle holding a dominant stake in Pirelli, supporting the tire and cable maker’s global technological development and corporate expansions.

Throughout its centennial history, Camfin maintained its executive presence within Milan’s historic financial citadel around Piazza degli Affari and the stock exchange district, remaining an influential participant in Italy’s modern industrial finance ecosystem.
