In 2017, a brief scene for Star Wars: The Last Jedi (dir. Rian Johnson) was filmed on Lokrum Island, a small forested island in the Adriatic approximately 600 metres from the walls of Dubrovnik’s Old Town. Lokrum served as part of the backdrop for Canto Bight, the glamorous casino city on the planet Cantonica. The island — a nature reserve reachable by regular ferry from Dubrovnik’s Old Port — is also notable as the filming location for several Game of Thrones scenes in earlier seasons. The production used Dubrovnik’s medieval stone architecture and Lokrum’s subtropical gardens to suggest an alien world of opulence and excess.
