La Donna Etrusca at the Museo di Villa Giulia (free admission)

A special visit retracing the role of Etruscan women through history, seen through the lifestyles, costumes, objects, sculptures and frescoes of the Etruscan world. The museum is housed in the Villa Giulia, built for Pope Julius III in the 1500s, a fine example of a Renaissance villa with a garden of nymphaea, mosaics and frescoed porticoes.

The route took in some of ancient art’s absolute masterpieces — the Sarcophagus of the Spouses, the Apollo of Veii, the pediment of the Temple of Pyrgi, the Ficoroni Cista, antique toilet mirrors and jewellery among them — with particular attention to the pieces relating to Etruscan women and to the gardens of Pope Julius III’s villa.
