Joseph Younger Is Born (1894)
On 1 July 1894 the architect Joseph Younger was born. He built his career in Washington, D.C., where he became one of the capital’s most accomplished designers of large apartment houses between the wars. His masterwork, the Kennedy–Warren on Connecticut Avenue (1930–31), is among the finest Art Deco residential buildings in the United States: a buff-brick and aluminium composition whose stepped massing and stylised eagles gave the new streamlined idiom a monumental, permanent form. Younger did not live to see its later fame — he died in 1932, at just thirty-eight.
