Highlander (1986) made the clan stronghold of its immortal hero out of Eilean Donan Castle, the much-photographed fortress on a tidal island where three sea lochs meet in the western Highlands. The castle seen today is itself a twentieth-century reconstruction of a medieval original, a romantic vision of Scotland the film embraced wholeheartedly.
