Game of Thrones — Filming at Þingvellir (The Vale of Arryn)

17 April 2011 — 19 May 2019
Þingvellir — Where Tectonic Plates and Democracy Collide

Þingvellir’s dramatic Almannagjá rift gorge and surrounding lava fields served as “The Vale of Arryn” in Game of Thrones (2011–2019). The rocky passage through the Almannagjá fissure stood in for the approach to The Eyrie, the mountain stronghold of House Arryn. The Öxará River corridor and surrounding landscape were also used for scenes involving Arya Stark and the Hound in Seasons 3 and 4 of the series. Showrunners: David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Filming took place across multiple production seasons at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
