First Sunday guided tours: Salinas, Botero at RISO and the Monreale cloister — 6 September

On the first Sunday of the month Italy’s state museums open free of charge — and on Sunday 6 September CoopCulture adds three guided routes between Palermo and Monreale, three very different ways into the island’s heritage.

At the Museo RISO, the guided visit enters the exhibition Fernando Botero. Il peso dei sogni (visits at 10:00, 11:00 and 12:00; €7 with audio devices, museum entry free). At the Museo Archeologico Salinas — the oldest archaeological museum in Sicily — the route crosses the great collections of the island’s ancient sites, beginning with Selinunte (visits at 10:00 and 11:30; €5, museum entry free). At Monreale, the visit reads the carved capitals of the Benedictine cloister beside the cathedral, capital by capital — biblical scenes, medieval bestiaries and images of daily life along the famous colonnade, down to the garden and the fountain of the chiostrino (visits at 11:00 and 12:00; €5, free entry for the first Sunday of the month).
