The Catholic Church keeps the feast of Saint Thomas More, together with Saint John Fisher, on 22 June. More was held in the Tower of London for over a year before his execution on Tower Hill on 6 July 1535, for refusing to accept Henry VIII as head of the English church. The fortress that jailed him is now one of London’s most visited monuments; the refusal that got him there still gets taught as a definition of conscience.
