Feast of Saint Romuald — June 19

The feast of Saint Romuald, the Ravenna monk who founded the Camaldolese order, falls on 19 June. Tradition long dated his hermitage in the Casentino forest to 1012, though the community’s own historical institute now places the founding closer to 1023-1026, on the evidence of a documented church consecration in 1027. Whatever the exact year, the hermit cells scattered through the fir trees at Camaldoli are still lived in, by monks following a rule not much changed in a thousand years.
