Death Anniversary: Johann Christoph Graupner — May 10, 1760
He died in Darmstadt on 10 May 1760, having served as court Kapellmeister for nearly half a century. Although offered the post of Thomaskantor in Leipzig in 1723 ahead of Johann Sebastian Bach, his Darmstadt patron refused to release him; his massive output of over fourteen hundred church cantatas and eighty orchestral suites remained largely preserved in manuscript.
