Death Anniversary: Giovanni Porta — June 21, 1755
He died in Munich on 21 June 1755 after eighteen years as court Kapellmeister to the Elector of Bavaria Charles Albert. Trained in Venice under Francesco Gasparini, he had previously directed music at the Ospedale della Pietà and staged celebrated operas at Venice’s Teatro San Cassiano and London’s King’s Theatre, earning praise across Europe for his expressive vocal melody.
A note on this date. The exact day of birth is not preserved in Venetian parish records (c. 1675); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 21 June. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
