Death Anniversary: Giacobbe Cervetto — January 14, 1783

He died in London on 14 January 1783 at the extraordinary age of over one hundred. Having arrived in England around 1738 as an Italian cello virtuoso, he played in the Drury Lane theatre orchestra alongside Garrick and published influential collections of sonatas and trios that firmly popularised the violoncello as a solo instrument across Great Britain.

A note on this date. The exact day and place of birth are unrecorded in late seventeenth-century Italian records (c. 1682); we celebrate his verified centenarian death anniversary on 14 January. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.

Dates verified on Treccani, DBI, vol. 24 (1980), voce "CERVETTO, Giacobbe" (https://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/giacobbe-cervetto_(Dizionario-Biografico)/); Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, entry "Cervetto, Jacob" (https://doi.org/10.1093/ref:odnb/5004).
