He died in Vienna on 11 March 1772 as Kapellmeister of St. Stephen’s Cathedral and Oberkapellmeister of the imperial court. Ennobled by Emperor Francis I, he famously discovered the young Joseph Haydn as a boy chorister in Hainburg, bringing him to St. Stephen’s and mentoring him during his formative years.
