Edward the Confessor died on 5 January 1066, eight days after the consecration of the abbey church he had rebuilt at Westminster. He was buried the next morning before its high altar, and his shrine still stands at the heart of Westminster Abbey. The date of his death opened the succession crisis that ended, ten months later, at Hastings.
