The fairy-tale silhouette of Neuschwanstein Castle stood in for Baron Bomburst’s castle in the kingdom of Vulgaria in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Ludwig II’s nineteenth-century folly in the Bavarian Alps, itself built as a stage-set fantasy of a medieval keep, was a natural fit for a film about a flying car and a child-catcher.
