Born in Alkmaar on 26 August 1687 and baptised in Amsterdam, the son of a tailor from Liège. He trained in Amsterdam under Carl Rosier, serving as cathedral Kapellmeister at Antwerp Cathedral from 1725 to 1731 before moving to London, where he established a successful career as cello virtuoso and theatre composer.
