Birth Anniversary: Samuel Beckett — April 13, 1906

Samuel Beckett was born near Dublin on 13 April 1906 — Good Friday that year, a coincidence he never made much of. He studied at Trinity College Dublin from 1923 to 1927 and came back as a lecturer in French in 1930, resigning after little more than a year to go and write instead. The Long Room of the college library, built for a very different kind of certainty, held the young Beckett before the plays that made silence and waiting into subjects of their own.
