Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh on 13 November 1850. The family later moved to Heriot Row in the city’s New Town, a short walk from the volcanic crag that carries Edinburgh Castle — the skyline he grew up under before he ever wrote of other islands. Treasure Island and Jekyll and Hyde came later, in exile; the city that shaped his eye for a good, dark street never left the writing.
