Anniversary: The Wreck of the Titanic is Found — September 1, 1985

Just after one in the morning on 1 September 1985, a robot camera sled called Argo, towed slowly across the seabed by a joint French-American expedition, passed over one of the Titanic’s boilers. Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel had found the wreck seventy-three years after it sank, lying in two pieces nearly 3,800 metres down in the North Atlantic — closing a search that had failed, quietly, for decades.
