In the early hours of 5 November 1605, a search of the cellars beneath the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster found Guy Fawkes guarding thirty-six barrels of gunpowder — enough, if lit the next morning during the state opening of Parliament, to kill the king and destroy the building entirely. The plot failed; the palace that survived it burned down in 1834 and was rebuilt as the Gothic Revival landmark that stands today.
