On 31 March 1889, with the lifts still not working, Gustave Eiffel climbed nearly two thousand steps on foot to the top of his tower and raised the French flag over it, calling the moment the greatest satisfaction of his life. The public did not get in until May, when the World’s Fair opened and the tower became its gate — but the structure itself, the tallest thing anyone had ever built, was already finished and standing on the day Eiffel climbed it.
