Gustav Klimt was born on 14 July 1862 on the edge of Vienna. In 1897 he was among the founders of the Vienna Secession and became its first president, leading the revolt against academic art. His «golden phase» — The Kiss, the portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer, the Beethoven Frieze — fuses figure, gold and ornament into precious, sensual surfaces that are the face of Austrian Jugendstil. The anniversary marks the painter who made Vienna a capital of the new century.
