Birth Anniversary: Egon Schiele — June 12, 1890

Egon Schiele was born at Tulln, near Vienna, on 12 June 1890. A pupil and protégé of Klimt, he turned that decorative grace into something raw and cutting: contorted bodies, merciless self-portraits, a nervous line that is already Expressionism. In a handful of years, and to great scandal, he built an intensely concentrated body of work, among the most modern in the Vienna of the new century. The anniversary marks the artist who brought the unease of the age inside the human figure.
