Birth Anniversary: Antoni Gaudí — June 25, 1852
Ritratto d'autore · Cultural Heritage Online
Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was born on 25 June 1852 in Catalonia, between Reus and Riudoms, and became the supreme interpreter of Catalan Modernisme. Trained in Barcelona, he built there the work that defines his language: organic forms drawn from nature, surfaces clad in broken ceramic mosaic (trencadís) and structural solutions as bold as the catenary arch. Casa Batlló, Casa Milà (La Pedrera), Park Güell and, above all, the Sagrada Família — the site of a lifetime — are his. Seven of his works are UNESCO World Heritage today. The anniversary marks the architect who turned Barcelona into an open-air museum of Modernisme.
