Death Anniversary: Gustav Klimt — February 6, 1918

Gustav Klimt died in Vienna on 6 February 1918, felled by a stroke and then by pneumonia, in the same year that carried off much of his generation. He left many unfinished canvases in the studio and an unmistakable language of gold, mosaic and sinuous line that had scandalised and conquered Vienna in equal measure. The anniversary marks the master of the Secession, the bridge between symbolism and modernity.
