Photo: Varischi, Artico & C. — CC0 (Wikimedia Commons) Giuseppe Sommaruga died at Milan on 27 March 1917, not yet fifty. He was born in the same city on 11 July 1867, son of Giacomo, a decorator, and Elisa Biffi, and from 1883 he sat in Camillo Boito’s course at the school of architecture of the Accademia di Brera. Palazzo Castiglioni in corso Venezia, built between 1900 and 1903 for the engineer Ermenegildo Castiglioni, is the work Milan remembers him by. The Faccanoni family gave him a run of buildings at Sarnico between 1907 and 1912, and the villa he raised for Luigi Faccanoni in via Buonarroti between 1911 and 1913 is now the Columbus clinic. He was a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur and for many years presided over the association of Lombard architects.
