All Saints’ Day falls on 1 November. Tradition holds that in the eighth century Pope Gregory III dedicated a chapel inside Old St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome to the relics of the apostles, martyrs and saints — the origin, for the churches of Rome and later the whole Western Church, of keeping their feast on this day. St. Peter’s Square and Basilica still stand at the centre of the calendar they helped set.
