Birth Anniversary: Alessandro Mazzucotelli — December 30, 1865
Photo: Emilio Sommariva — Public domain (Wikimedia Commons) Alessandro Mazzucotelli was born at Lodi on 30 December 1865, son of Giovanni Valente, an iron merchant, and Rosa Caprara. In 1883, when the family business failed, he left the ginnasio and went to Milan to work as a blacksmith. The ironwork that made his name is still in place: the new Milan Stock Exchange, now the Post Office (1901–02), villa Ottolini at Busto Arsizio (1903–04), casa Tensi (1908), palazzo Berri Meregalli (1913), and the expiatory chapel raised for King Umberto I at Monza (1910). From 1903 he taught at the Scuola Umanitaria in Milan on a method of his own: the theoretical study of nature first, then direct experiment with the material.
