Alessandro Mazzucotelli died at Milan on 29 January 1938, at seventy-two. His iron had travelled further than he had: the balconies of a villa in Buenos Aires, and, with the sculptor Leonardo Bistolfi, the gates of the Teatro Nacional in Mexico City. His last public appearances were at the Milan Triennale, in 1930, 1933 and 1936, where he presented himself as what he had always called himself, a man who works iron. The style he had helped to define was by then long out of fashion. The balconies stayed up, and that is where he is still recognised.
