L’architetto Ernesto Basile (Palermo, 31 gennaio 1857 – Palermo, 26 agosto 1932) morì nella sua città natale. Figura centrale del Liberty italiano e figlio dell’architetto Giovan Battista Filippo Basile, aveva completato il Teatro Massimo di Palermo (aperto nel 1897), costruito il Villino Florio all’Olivuzza e Villa Igiea, e diretto dal 1904 la ricostruzione del Palazzo Montecitorio a Roma. Tenne la cattedra di architettura all’Università di Palermo dal 1890 e diresse la Reale Accademia di Belle Arti. Alla sua morte lo stile floreale che aveva guidato era già superato dal Novecento e dal Razionalismo.
