Birth Anniversary: William Morris — March 24, 1834
William Morris was born at Walthamstow, near London, on 24 March 1834. Designer, craftsman, writer and reformer, he is the father of the Arts and Crafts movement and, indirectly, a forerunner of Art Nouveau. Against mass industrial production he argued for the value of handwork and of everyday beauty: his wallpapers and textiles — willows, pomegranates, the «Strawberry Thief» — are still in production. With the Kelmscott Press he renewed the art of the book as well. The anniversary marks the man who wanted to put beauty back into ordinary life.
