Egon Schiele died in Vienna on 31 October 1918, at twenty-eight, during the Spanish influenza epidemic that had just taken his wife Edith, who was pregnant, and Klimt himself. In barely a decade of work he had left hundreds of works of rare expressive force. The anniversary marks a talent burnt out very young, and a Vienna that with the end of the war and the empire was closing its golden season.
