History
The museum was established in 1967, when the Ministero per la Pubblica Istruzione created it within the Palazzo delle Scienze. In the 1960s, early medieval collections previously held mainly by the Museo Nazionale Romano were moved there to support research into the post-classical age. The institution was absorbed into the new Museo delle Civiltà in 2016.
What you see
The photograph shows the monumental stone facade of the Palazzo delle Scienze, with tall vertical pillars rising above the entrance and a row of trees along the empty asphalt road in front. The inscription above the entrance reads «MUSEO DELL’ALTO MEDIOEVO».
Another photograph shows a different monumental building of the same E.U.R. complex: the Museo nazionale delle arti e tradizioni popolari, identified by Stefano Vigolo. Its long colonnade fronts a paved forecourt and a grassy lawn, and the inscription on the architrave reads «MUSEO NAZIONALE DELLE ARTI E TRADIZIONI POPOLARI». This is the second of the two symmetrical rationalist palazzi that face Piazza Guglielmo Marconi and together form the Museo delle Civiltà. Unlike the Palazzo delle Scienze, which houses the early medieval collections, this building preserves the national demoethnoanthropological collections, with over one hundred thousand documents of Italian popular traditions acquired from 1906 onwards. The displays are organised on two floors around the themes of land and resources, living and dwelling, and rituals, feasts and ceremonies.
