History
The Banca Nazionale del Lavoro was founded in 1913, as recorded in the bank’s profile. The decision to build a new headquarters in the centre of Rome was driven by Arturo Osio, the bank’s General Manager at the time. Construction began in 1933 and the building was inaugurated in 1937. The architect was Marcello Piacentini, who is regarded as the father of Constructive Realism and worked on several major projects in the Italian capital.
What you see
The photograph shows a large white stone building with a tall colonnade. The inscription «BANCA NAZIONALE DEL LAVORO» is visible on the façade. The plans for the new headquarters took as their reference a recently finished government ministry building in Rome, which combined classical and modernist elements in a rectangular form with strict, clean lines. The architect also chose the decorative elements for the interior. The Via Veneto façade was subsequently repeated on both newly-opened and refurbished branches.
