History

Constructed around 1575 to 1600 during the late Elizabethan period, the building at 16 and 18 Church Street served as a prosperous merchant residence and commercial premises. Upton upon Severn was a vital inland port on the River Severn, linking trade between Bristol and the West Midlands. Over subsequent centuries the property adapted to various town uses, including functioning as an inn and residential tenements. In the late 20th century, community preservation efforts rescued the historic fabric from dereliction, leading to the establishment of the town museum.

What you see

From Church Street, the facade presents an impressive display of decorative English timber carpentry with plaster infill panels, jettied upper floors, and steeply pitched tiled gables. Inside, visitors encounter uneven flagstone and timber flooring, massive oak tie-beams, an enclosed courtyard passageway, and low-ceilinged period display rooms displaying original woodwork and Victorian domestic artifacts.
