History

The monastery was originally founded in the 15th century by the Dominican Order along Strada Sării (today Strada General Gheorghe Magheru). Following the Protestant Reformation in 1543, the local Saxon population adopted Lutheranism and the monastic properties came under municipal control. In 1728, following the Habsburg integration of Transylvania, the Austrian administration allocated the complex to Ursuline nuns arriving from Pozsony (Bratislava). Between 1728 and 1733, the buildings underwent comprehensive reconstruction, adapting the medieval structures into an educational and monastic sanctuary.

What you see

Visitors to Strada General Magheru see an expansive complex harmonizing Gothic architectural remnants with prominent Baroque additions. The exterior features classical Baroque pilasters, round-arched windows, and an ornamental portal. Inside, the church retains Gothic vaulted elements integrated with ornate Baroque altars, statuary, and vaulted cloisters reflecting centuries of layered Transylvanian craftsmanship.
