Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church

A brick church from 1907 in Coffeyville’s original black neighborhood, built to replace a wooden chapel the congregation had outgrown.

At a glance

This one-story brick church stands at 202 W. 12th Street. It combines Romanesque and Gothic Revival elements on a rusticated limestone foundation. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

History

The congregation’s first church was a frame structure from 1882. By 1907, they had outgrown it. The present brick building replaced that earlier wooden church.

What you see

A single-story brick volume rises from a rusticated limestone base. The design borrows from Romanesque and Gothic Revival. That combination gives the small church a sturdy, vertical presence on its street.

Cultural significance

The church sits in what was the original black neighborhood of Coffeyville. Its 1995 National Register listing recognizes both the building and its place in that community’s history.
