Birth Anniversary: António Teixeira — May 14, 1707
Born in Lisbon on 14 May 1707. Sent to Rome in 1714 at the expense of King John V of Portugal, he spent fourteen years studying composition and sacred polyphony in the Eternal City before returning to Lisbon in 1728 to be elected examining chaplain of the Patriarchal Cathedral.
A note on this date. The exact day of death in Lisbon is unrecorded (c. 1769); we celebrate his verified birth anniversary on 14 May. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
Dates verified on Manuel Carlos de Brito, Opera in Portugal in the Eighteenth Century, Cambridge University Press, 1989; Grove Music Online, entry "Teixeira, António" (https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.27402).
