Death Anniversary: John Frederick Lampe — July 25, 1751

He died in Edinburgh on 25 July 1751 and was buried in the Canongate Kirkyard. Born in Saxony and moving to London around 1725, he played bassoon in Handel’s opera orchestra and became a premier composer of English theatrical burlesques, including the smash hit The Dragon of Wantley, as well as Methodist hymns for Charles Wesley.

A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in Saxon registers (c. 1703); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 25 July. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
