He died in Naples on 13 April 1764. Trained at the Conservatorio di Santa Maria di Loreto under Francesco Durante, he served as concertmaster of the Real Cappella di Napoli and violin maestro at Loreto. His thirty surviving concertos and sinfonias for strings and flutes exhibit an intense, fiery instrumental idiom unique in late Neapolitan baroque music.

A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in Neapolitan parish archives (c. 1700); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 13 April. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.

In September, the doors that are usually shut open

For one long weekend every September, some fifty European countries run the European Heritage Days together: palaces, workshops, archives and private houses that are closed the rest of the year let visitors in, almost always for nothing. Italy sets its own dates, and they are published a few weeks ahead.
