Death Anniversary: Francesco Barsanti — April 30, 1775
He died in London on 30 April 1775 in modest circumstances, having moved to Great Britain in 1714 in the company of Francesco Geminiani. Working in London and Edinburgh as a virtuoso flautist and oboist, his op. 3 concerti grossi and his ingenious arrangements of traditional Scots songs into chamber concertos represented an exceptional synthesis of Italian counterpoint with British folk melody.
A note on this date. The exact day of birth is unrecorded in the parish records of Lucca (c. 1690); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 30 April. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
