He died in Naples on 3 March 1768 in modest circumstances. Having directed the Opera of the Nobility in London in direct rivalry with Handel, and taught the young Joseph Haydn counterpoint in Vienna, his fifty surviving operas and cantatas stand as benchmarks of the virtuoso Neapolitan bel canto vocal style.
