Death Anniversary: Johann Christoph Pepusch — July 20, 1752
He died in London on 20 July 1752 and was buried in the chapel of the Charterhouse, where he had served as organist since 1737. A founder of the Academy of Vocal Music and a dedicated collector of ancient manuscripts, he is best remembered for arranging the overture and folk airs for John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera in 1728.
A note on this date. The exact day of birth is not established in Prussian parish records (c. 1667/1668 in Berlin); we celebrate his verified death anniversary on 20 July. We publish it with the warning rather than leave the page out, and if you can point us to a register or an archive that carries it we will confirm or correct it.
