Wartime sheet metal stamping, automotive components, and industrial transformation in Borgo San Paolo.
Established in Turin in 1916 during the industrial mobilization of the First World War, the workshop founded by Giuseppe Cornaglia developed from a modest sheet metal stamping facility into an essential partner of Italy’s automotive manufacturing industry.
Wartime Sheet Metal and Borgo San Paolo Roots
As Turin’s major industrial corporations such as Fiat, Lancia, and Ansaldo mobilized their assembly lines for military production, independent sub-suppliers were vital for specialized metal shaping. Giuseppe Cornaglia established his workshop in the rapidly expanding industrial quarter of Borgo San Paolo, specializing in precision sheet metal forming, welded fuel containers, and stamped structural fittings for military transport vehicles and aeroplanes. Operating close to the Lancia factory and the newly erected industrial plants of southern Turin, Cornaglia earned a reputation for rapid tooling adjustments and meticulous dimensional tolerance.
Interwar Automotive Expansion and Urban Redevelopment
During the 1920s and 1930s, the enterprise capitalized on Italy’s domestic mass-motorization initiatives, supplying exhaust manifolds, stamped oil pans, air filter casings, and fuel tanks for legendary production cars including the Fiat 508 Balilla and the Fiat 500 Topolino. Post-war expansion broadened the company’s capabilities into advanced plastics, fluid conduction, and filtration systems, ultimately necessitating the relocation of heavy manufacturing to modern suburban facilities in Beinasco.
The historical workshop buildings in Borgo San Paolo were decommissioned as production centralized outside the urban core. Today, the former industrial plots along the historic Turin manufacturing corridor have been completely regenerated, accommodating residential apartment complexes, neighborhood commerce, and tertiary urban infrastructure.
